Tips Importing MP4 Video to Premiere Pro CC

Why can’t one just import MP4 files to Premiere Pro and edit happily away? Read on to find it out.

Tips Importing MP4 Video to Premiere Pro CC
Although Adobe claimed that Premiere Pro offers support for MP4 video, it is limited to QuickTime Movie and XDCAM EX. There are still some video, audio codec problems while importing other source videos in .MP4 to Premiere Pro CC. And there are frequently asked questions quoted below:

"Anytime I try to drag an MP4 into Premiere Pro CC, it tells me the file has no audio or video. Is there something that I am missing that is causing the Premiere Pro CC to not be compatible"

So, why we can't import your MP4 file to Adobe Premiere Pro? The reason is that MP4 is a format container with different codecs. If Premiere can't recognize and process your file, that's probably because your MP4 file codec isn't compatible with Adobe Premiere.

Solution 1:

To get Premiere Pro to work with MP4 files, first try to install the latest drivers. Copy the video to your desktop and try to change the extension of the clip from mp4 to mov, but make sure you make a copy, don't delete it from the original location. Try it to check if it works.

Solution 2:

Mostly, the MP4 videos can be encoded with H.264/AVC, Xvid and more codecs which does not work well with video editing software except for few ones. To avoid any problem and save time when using MP4 files in Premiere Pro, the best method is to convert MP4 into a Premiere Pro most compatible format like MPEG-2 with a 3rd-party software. Here is how to do.

Steps to convert MP4 videos to Premiere Pro CC acceptable format

To finish the task, a lot of forum members has recommended the utility Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac. By running it, there is no need to set the codec yourself: the program has optimized presets for Adobe Premiere (Premiere CC included). With it, you can convert any video file including MP4 to Adobe Premiere compatible format with the original quality. If you're using a Windows PC, just turn to the Windows version.

Step 1: After downloading, install and run this MP4 to Premiere converter, and then click the "Add" button to load the .mp4 videos. You can also drag and drop the mp4 files to the software directly.

Step 2: Click "Format" pull down list to select Adobe Premiere/Sony Vegas> MPEG-2(*.mpg) as the best video format for Premiere Pro. WMV, MOV formats are the good choice as well.

Tip: The default settings works well. If you're not satisfied with the output quality, click the "Settings" icon to adjust video and audio parameters on the Profile Setting as you need to get the best quality video.

Step 3: Simply click the "Convert" button to start converting and everything else will be automated. If you have added quite a bunch of video files, it would take some time to convert. In such case, you can click Option and tick the box "Shut down the computer after conversion".

You're done. Now your MP4 files will be converted into MPG files ready to be imported to Adobe Premiere Pro CC as well as CS6, CS5, CS4 beautifully.
